To learn about our Mutli-Factor Authentication, the MU HelpDesk (570-662-HELP) has provided the following information:
Getting Your Password - New User
If you are a new student who has not accessed your email or any other Mansfield services such as Self-Service, My Mansfield, etc., you will need to activate your account first. Go to the Account Activation Website and step thru the process. You will need access to the phone number or email address you submitted on your application. Once that is done you must setup MFA on your account or you will not be able to access campus services.
Resetting Your Password - Current User
To manage your password, please use our Password Reset Website and step through the password reset process. Please note that your password cannot contain any parts of your name, date of birth or other identifiable information that Microsoft has on your account. When you log in, you may be notified that you need to provide or verify information for your account. Please make sure that the information we have listed is correct and add or edit any missing/incorrect information at that time.
Setting Up MFA
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) uses a secondary means or device to confirm it is you when you are logging into your account. We highly suggest adding the Microsoft Authenticator App as an option, as it is the most convenient MFA method offered. You can manage your authentication methods at the Account Management website.
We recommend having at least 3 methods configured:
-
Telephone number (in the format +1 1234567890, no dashes). Make sure you use your cell phone number and not your parents. You can add your parent's number as a secondary number in case you lose your phone or change your phone number. This way you can always send the code to a trusted source to gain access.
-
Personal email address (gmail, yahoo, icloud, live, ymail, etc)
-
The Microsoft Authenticator App on your smart phone or tablet
If the current account setup on your device is not working, you need to first delete existing Mansfield accounts from the App on your device, and on the Account Management website linked above, as they are no longer valid. For more information, read this article from Microsoft on setting up the Authenticator App.
Updating MFA Settings
If you change your phone number, it is important to remember to add the new number before removing the old one. (Set one as Mobile, the other as Alternate) Similarly, when you get a new device, set up the App and add that account using the Account Management website before you remove the old device entry. If you've already lost access to your primary MFA method, when logging in, there should be an option below the screen asking for the MFA method code or action where you can choose to use another method of MFA or select that you don't have access to the authentication method being attempted. You can then choose to use one of the other methods that are registered with your account.
Methods include:
-
Email (gmail, ymail, yahoo, icloud, etc): Important to register this for contact and identity verification, but not available to use for MFA directly.
-
Phone Call (up to 2 phone numbers): When getting a new phone, add the new number as the alternate phone before deactivating old number.
-
Text Message (using the registered phone numbers)
-
Microsoft Authenticator App (up to 2 devices): Can enter a one-time-use passcode from within the Microsoft Authenticator App or receive a push request to verify login using the Microsoft Authenticator App.
We recommend setting the default method to be the Microsoft Authenticator - Notification, using the Account Management website.
Don't Have a Cell Phone?
If you do not have a cell phone, you can purchase a YubiKey.
