Please be aware that viruses can, and have, run rampant across college campuses.
While the C.T. Department does their best to maintain a safe and secure network for the students, the reality is that it is impossible to stop all the viruses that may invade our network.
The best way to be safe is to install a virus protection program. We recommend using Sophos.
Other things to watch out for are Spyware and Adware, collectively referred to as Badware or Malware (due to it's malicious intent). At MU, our C.T. department relies heavily on the Internet, just as much as MU Students do. We do not block pages or content at MU. Some users invariably get Malware. To remove it, use Spybot S&D or Malwarebytes.
C.T.'s Virus Tips
Tip #1: Download an anti-virus software and schedule it to update every night at 3:00 a.m., and scan at 3:30 a.m. This way it gets done every day and you sleep right through it.
Tip #2: Update your machine, patches fix security holes that viruses exploit.
Tip #3: Do you have problems with pop-ups? It might be due to spyware or adware. Try Spybot S&D or Malwarebytes.
Tip #4: Computer slow? it might not be due to a virus. Try scan disk and then disk defragmenter, both are under the system tools in the accessories menu.
