Please be aware that viruses can, and have, run rampant across college campuses.
While the C.T. Department does their best to maintain a safe and secure network for the students, the reality is that it is impossible to stop all the viruses that may invade our network.
The most important thing students can do is learn about computer viruses: how they work, how you get them, which ones are hoaxes, and how you fix them.
The best way to be safe is to install a virus protection program. Mansfield University has a special agreement with McAfee, allowing MU Students to download and use McAfee Virus Scan for free. Log in to My.Mansfield with your Campus Services ID and password (if you don't know either, visit My Accounts). Once logged in, the upper left hand side of the page has a link to download McAfee. If you have any questions, please call the helpdesk at x4357 (off campus, call 570-662-4357).
Other things to watch out for are Spyware, Adware, and HiJackers, collectively referred to as Badware or Malware (due to it's malicious intent). At MU, our C.T. department relies heavily on the Internet, just as much as MU Students do. We do not block pages or content at MU. Some users invariably get Malware. To remove it, we use Spybot S&D.
Our new SafeConnect procedure will tell you how well you are protected and make recommendations on improving your security status.
C.T.'s Virus Tips
Tip #1: Download McAfee, schedule to update everynight at 3:00 a.m, and scan at 3:30 a.m. That way it gets done every day and you sleep right through it.
Tip #2: Update your machine, patches fix security holes that viruses exploit.
Tip #3: Do you have problems with pop-ups? It might be due to spyware or adware. Try Spybot S&D.
Tip #4: Computer slow? it might not be due to a virus. Try scandisk and then disk defragmentor, both are under the system tools in the accessories menu.
